Third Tacoma Narrows Bridge construction work - ready for installation of the road deck sections while traffic passes on the nearby second Tacoma Narrows Bridge (the new bridge will carry eastbound traffic on Washington State Route 16 from the Kitsap Peninsula across the Tacoma Narrows, a part of Puget Sound, Tacoma, Washington, USA (July 2006) (The first bridge at this location was nicknamed Galloping Gertie and was destroyed by wind due to a flaw in its design in 1940 soon after construction was complete. The second bridge, nicknamed Sturdy Gertie was opened in 1950.) The third Tacoma Narrows bridge was opened for traffic in July of 2007.
